ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Belinda Vasquez Garcia

Imaginative, creative, passionate, effervescent and charming, Belinda Vasquez Garcia has built a life and career that seemed impossible given the impoverished conditions she faced from her birth in Los Angeles to her years growing up in Albuquerque. The hardships and challenges in life that Garcia encountered in her youth, strongly influenced her to adopt a different view of life and find success through dreams, hopes, persistence, hard work, and a deep love of writing. Her inspiration as a writer is taken from true tales of Hispanic witchcraft she heard as a child, from a strong Native American influence in her youth and through research she has undertaken over the last ten years. Her fictional work reaches beyond regional geography to entice anyone who enjoys the world of mysticism and the power of witchcraft and sorcery but with the spicy flavor of New Mexico.

A gifted writer, Garcia uses her unique voice and lyrical style to masterfully tell the story of life in New Mexico and the Southwest through use of historical fiction that is highly entertaining and educational. Her refreshing vision results in Garcia’s ability to fashion colorful and realistic characters along with creating compelling worlds that speak of shamans and witches, spiritual journeys, human compassion, individual frailties, love and hate, the importance of family, and the power of communities and families to endure through the ages. Through her literary work, Garcia is able to deeply touch the emotions of the reader, which is a special quality for any writer.

Garcia was a 2004 Finalist in the Santa Fe Writers Project for her novel Return of the Bones. The author has a degree in applied mathematics from the University of New Mexico and has worked as a Computer Software Engineer for one of the country’s leading national laboratories.

Recently, Garcia used her extensive knowledge of technology to create a new genre, kids-techno-fiction, which seeks to entertain and educate children about the computer. Her children’s book entitled Down The Computer Hole is an innovative and engaging work.

The book is an ingenious tale of a young girl who is accidentally pulled into the heart of the computer where she meets various characters who propel her into an unknown world bounded by both reality and fantasy at the same time. Through her creative abilities, Garcia developed characters that are actually computer programs, which allow the reader to be exposed to the language and components of a computer. This cleverly written book reflects Garcia’s desire to encourage children, especially girls, to become interested in and pursue careers in technology, mathematics and science. Garcia believes this is especially significant with the advent of a global community where the U.S. is challenged to properly educate its children and prepare them for a highly competitive world.
